In the new book Finding Magic Mountain: Life with Five Glorious Kids and a Rogue Gene Called FOP, author Carol Zapata-Whelan weaves through her family's past as she chronicles her son's senior year in high school, during which he readies for his future as a pre-med student at an elite university. Through the trials and triumphs of life on a collision course with a disabling disorder, Zapata-Whelan, a recovering worrier, learns to lean on faith and share her son's courage, lending hope to anyone facing a chronic challenge, a difficult trek or just a tough day. Author's Note: I wrote our family memoir, Finding Magic Mountain: Life with Five Glorious Kids and a Rogue Gene Called FOP, with the primary, urgent goal to raise FOP awareness and, in the process, draw support for research at Dr. Kaplan's lab. It is one small aspect of the FOP story, but it includes inspiring testimonies of many other FOP families and friends, and hopes to honor them, our beloved Jeannie Peeper, everyone in the international FOP community, the vital mission of Drs. Kaplan, Shore, Glaser, Zasloff, and all at the University of Pennsylvania's Center for FOP and Related Disorders and the International FOP Research Consortium. I fervently hope that this book will advance our urgent cause and share hope.
Finding Magic Mountain will be offered at major US bookstores, online through several English and foreign language sites, at Paul Newman's Hole in the Wall Gang Camp, and in Korea and Taiwan (translated). Excerpts - written to raise FOP awareness - can be found online at Literary Mama (a Forbes Top Pick) and Chicken Soup for the Latino Soul. It is my hope that FOP families and friends might consider ordering Finding Magic Mountain in bulk from the publisher so they may sell the books for donations at various fundraisers.
I thank anyone who has clicked to this link, with all best wishes!
